How do you ever get over the effects of yelling? If two other people have a confrontation, it's enough to scare the heck out of me. I feel the need to cry and my body starts shaking like I am very cold. And the older I get the worse it seems to get. I love my husband of 20 yrs dearly, but he doesn't understand that everytime he raises his voice (and he does that a lot and says that he's just a passionate person!!!) it freaks me out! And needless to say it does end in an a big yelling match!!! Don't know what else to do.

Alyssa,

Go to http://www.emofree.com and look at that site. I think there is stuff
there can help you with your specific issue.

The short answer is, YES, you CAN get beyond the effects of your father's yelling and mistreatment of you.
Try to find a therapist who is skilled in EMDR, and you may be able to get beyond this much quicker than you think.
Stay positive and go for it! And stop think you're a lowly no one. Now go be someone. You're father was wrong. Period.

Best,

Jim Hutt, Ph.D., MFT

Yes, I like this article...but I have one question. How do you ever get over the fear of being yelled at? I want to go into the Coast Guard and I know that the training involves yelling.

My father pinned me down in front of a computer and showed me images and movies of women, teens, and children being abused and hurt and yelled at when I was only 8 years old because I told him I wanted to be just like Papaw and join the military.

Ever since then, he put me through his own 'Bootcamp' which involved hitting, humiliating, and yelling at me to the point to where I violently hit someone if they yell at me.

How can I get over this fear so I can join the Coast Guard and be someone instead of a lowly no one?

Inji,

2 year old's can be difficult, I know. Kids of any age can be. Go to the following URL, http://www.loveandlogic.com, and get the Life Saver Kit. It will change your entire parenting experience.
I got this material (many years ago) when my kids were your 2, and I cannot say enough about how it helped me. I now teach all of the Love and Logic material to parents, no matter what ages their kids are.

I'm of the opinion that everything in this article makes perfect since. When I was a child my father used to yell alot, and he was a firm believer in the belt, he was very strict. When I reached my teens I had a very terrible fear of displeasing him or anyone else, I was terrified if I got a B in a subject, went out of my way to never make anyone angry. Even now any act of violence or yelling makes me burst out in tears, and any chance of failure makes me scared to death.

I was yelled at a lot while a kid. I am not a shy person. As I grew older I yelled back. Now I am 67 and realize that unless someone really yells at me, I tend to discount what they say. This has been a problem all my life.

Jim-

Great article! I related to all of these scenarios and have worked hard on my reactivity with your help. I feel so much better and hope that whoever reads this piece will take the first step in changing some of the behaviors he's not proud of. Thanks to you we've embraced Love and Logic and it's made our family a much "safer" place, emotionally.

Thanks for ALL your good work!
