What
I Do--I coach, counsel, teach and provide psychotherapy and couple counseling. I sit down, face-to-face with individuals, couples and families
in my office, counseling, teaching and coaching, or some combination of the three.
I began 'coaching' and providing counseling and psychotherapy 27 years ago, long
before the term 'coaching' was in vogue as it is now. I also have a strong clinical background as well, and consider it essential: without it, it is difficult
to know exactly when someone needs a therapist instead of a coach, and vice versa.

Couples sometimes need coaching for their parenting skills.
That means helping parents understand and manage their kids' difficulties, complexities
and behaviors as they unfold at any age. It includes teaching parents how to face
their own personal issues that inhibit healthy parenting and family functioning.
More than at any time in history, there is an abundance of "how to" information available to parents. As a parenting teacher and coach I can teach you parenting
techniques, and show you where to find state-of-the-art parenting information, and show you how to put it to
use.
When coaching people who have difficulty dealing with their's
or a family member's drug or alcohol problem, my years of experience, in addition
to a clinical postdoctoral internship at the Stanford Alcohol and Drug Clinic,
have provided me with the many tools necessary for helping with recovery from the addictions for the addict/alcoholic and the co-dependent.
I also provide general psychotherapy and counseling. This involves
helping people explore their internal processes, such as that which motivates
a particular behavior or thought, or how we come to believe what we believe, especially
if that thought or belief produces unhappiness in us. Occasionally, we may feel
a feeling that we don't know how to cope with, or we possess a painful emotion
that doesn't seem to go away, no matter what we do. These are common situations
for which people often seek counseling or psychotherapy.
I facilitate couple therapy or counseling for couples
who are experiencing any number of difficulties in their relationship, and help
them discover new methods of communication, conflict mamagement, and being together.
While coaching can help with some amount of that, there are times when therapy
may be indicated. Of special interest to me is working with high conflict couples who feel they have tried everything but have gained no relief for their problems. My orientation in working with couples is the developmental model of Bader & Pearson, from Menlo Park, California.
